Concrete Bases for Air Source Heat Pumps: A Local Installer’s Guide

What A Solid Heat Pump Base Needs

A good base is level, rigid and frost-resistant. Size it to the unit and the fixing pattern, not guesswork. Always check the manufacturer’s datasheet for footprint, bolt pattern and required clearances. That avoids undersized pads and misaligned anchors.

Local ground matters. Suffolk clays can move seasonally and some coastal plots see wind and salt exposure. A reinforced concrete pad gives better stability and vibration control than loose paving slabs, and it holds fixings securely. Pad Size And Layout (Clearances And Spacing)

As a rule of thumb, make the base 100–150 mm larger than the unit on all sides unless the manufacturer says otherwise. This gives room for anchor positions and keeps the edges tidy.

Respect airflow and service access. Keep the intake and discharge faces clear to stop recirculating air. Avoid recesses and corners that trap warm exhaust. Leave room for filters, covers and coil cleaning, and plan a neat route for pipes and electrics. Keep off weak ground, set the pad just above finished ground level, and allow a simple path for condensate to drain or soak away.

Thickness, Sub-Base And Reinforcement

For domestic ASHPs, a 100–150 mm thick slab cast dead level is typical. On soft or clay-rich soils, build up on 100–150 mm of well-compacted MOT Type 1 over a geotextile to stop fines pumping into the base. If you know the plot suffers heave or shrinkage, consider thickening or widening the pad.

Vibration And Noise Control

Fit rubber anti-vibration feet or isolation pads under the unit frame. Use stainless or galvanised M10–M12 anchors. You can set cast-in fixings with a template or drill and resin anchors after the pour has cured.

Mass helps. A thicker, denser pad reduces vibration. Leave a gap from walls to limit resonance and avoid mounting onto lightweight decks or fences. Consider neighbours: a well-sited, isolated unit stays quieter at the boundary.

Frost, Drainage And Weather Protection

Keep the pad 75–100 mm proud of surrounding ground to protect against frost heave and splashback. Build on a free-draining, compacted sub-base. Keep the pad itself level for the unit, and fall the surrounding ground away to shed water. Plan a condensate run-off to a drain or a small soakaway.

Recommended Mixes For Heat Pump Bases

C25/30 is a reliable default for domestic pads. Step up to C30/37 for heavier frames or exposed coastal plots. Choose 10 mm aggregate where access is tight and you want a smoother finish. Aim for slump S2–S3 depending on how you place and finish.

Optional air-entrainment improves freeze–thaw resistance, and macro-fibres help with crack control. Finish with a light brush texture for grip and round exposed edges to reduce chipping from foot traffic and mower wheels.

Volume is length × width × depth in metres. Example: 1.2 × 0.8 × 0.15 m ≈ 0.14 m³. A 1.4 × 1.0 × 0.15 m pad is about 0.21 m³. Volumetric supply means there is no need to pad the order “just in case”.

Pouring And Curing: Step-By-Step

Excavate to formation level and remove soft spots. Lay a geotextile if needed, then compact MOT Type 1 in thin layers. Set level formwork, place reinforcement on spacers and confirm anchor layout or template before the pour.

Pour, strike off and check levels. Trowel, edge and brush lightly. Protect the surface from sun, wind and rain. Light foot traffic is fine after 24 hours; drill for resin anchors after 48–72 hours depending on temperature. Concrete reaches full design strength at 28 days.
